H1N1 flu clinics have been scheduled at the Brant County Health Unit (BCHU). At this time the vaccine is not being released to doctor’s offices in Brant County. Students, faculty and staff may register on line for their immunization. Starting Monday October 26, People of High Risks will be immunized first. That will include people with any chronic medical condition under the age of 65, women that are pregnant, healthy children from 6 months to 5 years, people living in remote or isolated communities, health care workers, household caregivers. General Public immunization starts Monday November 16, 2009. The link to register on line for this clinic is http://www.bchu.org/content/view/1632.
Flu declaration site for students, faculty and staff:
Laurier has launched a "flu declaration" website ( www.wlu.ca/h1n1) for students, staff and faculty to report if they are absent from class, work or teaching due to the flu or flu symptoms.
People are encouraged to stay at home if they have flu-like illness. Flu-like illness means: the onset of respiratory symptoms with fever and cough AND one or more of the following symptoms: sore throat, muscle aches, joint pain or fatigue. Nausea and diarrhea may also be present. The Public Health Fact Sheet titled "Do I have it" describes H1N1 symptoms and provides guidance when to see the doctor: http://www.waterlooregionpandemic.ca/en/personalpreparedness/resources/DoIhaveit_FS.pdf
Due to concerns about the spread of the H1N1 flu in the community, Public Health does not recommend students see a doctor for the sole purpose of getting a note to exempt them from academic requirements. In keeping with this recommendation, Laurier students are not required in Fall 2009 to obtain a physician’s note in order to request academic accommodation due to absence because of flu-like symptoms. Instead, by visiting www.wlu.ca/h1n1and using their secure Novell login and password, students can electronically identify the days they have been unable to fulfill academic requirements due to flu-like illness.
Students with flu symptoms should still contact Health Services if they would normally seek medical attention for their illness or if they have a co-existing chronic medical condition.
